A Far Trumpet

After twelve years of service, First Lieutenant Scott William Dunham, 6th Cavalry, is court-martialed and dishonorably dismissed from the United States Army for failing to provide a safe escort for the son of a powerful senator, resulting in the man's death at the hands of Comanches. Widowed, with nothing to tie him to his old life, Dunham sets out for New Mexico on the afternoon stage, intending to turn his hand to prospecting and hunting in the mountains. Upon arriving in Mimbres Valley, he encounters Holly Warren, the tough, independent manager of a supply station, also widowed, who scrapes out a living in the small settlement, alone but for her loyal guard dog Rondo. The two find themselves attracted to each other - but Holly, having buried both a husband and child, is wary of becoming attached to anyone again...
