George Carpenter's wife Carrie is out of town - and he has fallen in love with Irene Cobalt, his young Indian housekeeper. Local attorney Clarence Black thinks Cobalt is only sixteen, and wants sheriff Frank Girard to put an end to their association. But when Girard informs Black that Carpenter is not flouting the law, the lawyer urges the town council to pass an ordinance forbidding the relationship... Since her husband went off to work for the railroad, Margaret Fulmer has tended their homestead alone. Grant Shelby, the biggest rancher in the district, considers the Fulmers' patch to be on his land - and believes a lone woman will be easy to drive off.
